What is vaginismus?

Vaginismus is a condition in which the muscles of a woman’s vagina squeeze, clinch, or spasm, creating discomfort and pain when something is inserted, such as a tampon or a penis during sex.  Common complaints among women with vaginismus include painful sex, a tearing sensation, or the inability to have intercourse altogether. While childbirth is not the only cause, the majority of women with vaginismus begin experiencing these symptoms after giving birth.
